Golf - what else?Maintaining a good level of physical fitness by doing some kind of regular exercise each day has been shown through years of research to be a major method of lowering the risk of developing cancer – especially prostate cancer.

Men in the U.S. who are physically active have 75% lower rates of heart disease and prostate cancer than men who are sedentary.

Benefits of fitness and regular exercise include:

  • Improved vascularization (blood flow) to all organs, keeping everything healthier, including the prostate. The improved circulation promotes optimal exchange of nutrients, oxygen, CO2, nitrogen and waste products from all body cells and tissues.

  • Reducing your risk of most cancers. The improved fitness level keeps your percentage of body fat (your weight) under control, decreasing further risk of many cancers.

  • Reducing your risk of diabetes, heart and vascular problems, stroke, osteoporosis and arthritis. Fitness has also been shown to slow down or even reverse the process of these medical conditions.

  • Improving your cardiovascular system (heart, lungs, arteries and veins).

  • Strengthening your muscles. Your muscles pump the blood around and back up to the heart and brain. Stronger muscles promote better blood circulation to all body tissues and organs.

  • Improving the flexibility of your joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments, reducing the risk of injury.

  • Positive self-esteem -- Exercise keeps a person upbeat and motivated. When you’re taking a 10 minute walk every morning, you are actively doing something positive to maintain your health. This promotes positive self-confidence.

Design Your Own Fitness/exercise Routine

  • Take a 10-minute walk every morning. Just 10 minutes!
That’s all…five minutes out and five minutes back.

  • Choose at least 2 exercises that you enjoy, in additional to your 10-minute morning walk. Walk on the beach, walk in the pool, play golf, tennis, shuffle board, horse shoes, or toss a basketball!

  • Do something in the way of fitness for yourself every day. Park your car farther away in the parking lot. Take the stairs. Take out the trash.

  • Start slowly and gradually do a little more each week.

  • Try exercising with a partner. You will be more consistent.

  • Keep your doctor informed of your activities.

You’ll find if you incorporate regular exercise into your daily schedule, avoiding tobacco, alcohol, and enjoying a good nutrition plan, you will be:

  • Healthier - have fewer colds and flu symptoms, fewer cancers, heart problems and diabetes.

  • Happier - have a more active lifestyle, a better quality of life, and a more positive attitude toward life and its challenges.
